Safari Overview
A beautifully timed seasonal safari by Lumara Expedition, designed to place you in the right location at the right time to witness one of the most extraordinary chapters of the Great Wildebeest Migration.
This journey is all about timing, movement, and understanding where the migration truly is. From December to early March, the southern plains of the greater Serengeti ecosystem, especially the Ndutu region, become the gathering ground for vast herds of wildebeest and zebra. From around mid-January through February, the calving season begins, transforming the open plains into one of Africa’s most dramatic wildlife spectacles. Thousands of wildebeest give birth within a short period, and with new life comes intense predator activity, making this one of the finest times of year for travelers hoping to see both the tenderness and the raw reality of the wild.
This safari combines three very different but complementary ecosystems. It begins in Tarangire National Park, known for its giant baobab trees and impressive elephant herds, continues into the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater, and then leads into the Ndutu plains, where the migration settles during the calving season. The route is ideal for first-time travellers because it offers variety, rich wildlife encounters, and a deeper understanding of how Tanzania’s ecosystems connect.
During your stay in Ndutu, accommodation is arranged in a seasonal tented camp, allowing you to sleep close to the migration itself. These camps are comfortable and atmospheric, offering proper beds, en-suite bathrooms, warm hospitality, and a true sense of being in the heart of the wilderness. This is not simply a safari of checking parks off a list; it is a journey designed around wildlife movement, giving guests a more authentic and rewarding safari experience.
Please note: although the safari itself is often described as a 4-day wildlife itinerary, the full programmed below is organized as a 6-day journey including arrival and departure, to make it clearer and easier for first-time travelers to follow.
